Winter's story
Hi there! Let me introduce myself. My name is Winter. I am about 2 years old and am a fun-loving girl! My past was a rough one so I'll keep my backstory brief.
I had a previous owner who dumped me out on the side of a highway in Alabama. I was pregnant at the time and wasn't sure what to do. I thought they would come back for me so I sat in the same spot on the highway day-after-day, waiting for my owner to come back to pick me up. After about four days of sitting on the side of the road, I was finally picked up by some really nice people! They brought me to a doggie sanctuary where I got food, warm blankets, a bed, and some other doggie playmates to hang out with. From there I traveled to my foster home in Minnesota to become a Warrior Dog! I gave birth to my babies while in my foster home in Minnesota, but sadly they were all stillborn with the exception of one who only lived for a few hours. I was heartbroken after losing my pups and it took me a while to recover from the emotional trauma I had experienced. I am so lucky though to have had my foster family to help me make it through that hard time!! It's amazing how much comfort a snuggle and soft voice of a human can do to help you through a difficult experience.
Although my past is sad and one that no dog should ever have to experience, I'm grateful for finding my way to Warrior Dog Rescue!! I now get to be my own dog and am also figuring out who I am. After all that I've been through and the short time I've been in foster care, I just know that my future is going to be AMAZING!
So let me tell you about myself! I have three fur-sisters that live at my foster home. I LOVE having doggie friends to play with! One of them doesn't like to play much, but I still like to go lay by her to let her know that we are friends even though she's not much for wresting or chasing. My other two sisters love to play chase and to wrestle with me. We have so much fun together! I could run and chase with them all day - if only they could keep up with me! I would love to have a furry sibling in my forever home!
I've been working on my training in my foster home too! So far, I know how to sit, lay down, and am potty trained! If I have to go outside, I go to the door and cry so the humans know that it's time for me to go out! I have been staying in my crate during the day when my foster family is at work and I don't mind it at all. I especially like having a bone to chew on while in my crate during the day. When my foster family does get home, I am SO HAPPY!! It feels like they have been gone for so long that I can't help but cry out with happiness when I see them, even though they tell me it's only been a few hours! I'm trying to do better at not jumping when my people come home but I just am so happy that I can't help but want to hug them and get as close to their face for a good kiss as possible! We have a lot of gates in doorways at my foster home. They tell me it's to keep me safe if someone opens a door on the other side but I don't understand how that's possible since I can just jump right over the baby gates without exerting hardly any effort. After my foster mom watched me do this, she now won't let me go outside in our fenced in backyard without dragging a leash since she's worried I'll leap over our 4 foot fence.
I also really like to go on walks. It's fun to go out and explore new places with my humans. I'm a bit of a zig-zagger when walking on leash, but I don't pull and I will stop to wait for my people if I realize that I'm getting ahead of them. I also will go potty while on a leash walk. Who needs privacy for that anyway?
I love to be nice and close to my humans. I even try to sit in their lap sometimes even though I'm about 45lbs. My foster family tells me that I don't have a concept of personal space. I don't really know what that means.... Did I mention that they let me sleep in bed with them? Human beds are the BEST! I love to snuggle in at night to feel the comfort from my family. I never really got to snuggle with people in my past so I am soaking that up in my new life!!
I cannot wait to find my forever family! I've been through so much in a short amount of time but I am forever grateful that I was picked up on the side of the road that day as my life has been completely changed for the better since then! I cannot imagine how my life would be if it weren't for those great people that picked me up that day and helped me get to Minnesota! I am realizing that I had been missing out on so much amazingness in the world and I am so excited to get to continue sharing great experiences with an amazing forever family that will take care of me, love me, and appreciate me for me! If you think we might be a match, please fill out an app so we can set up a time to meet! I am so looking forward to it!

All our Warrior Dogs will have all age appropriate medical care and vaccines, a microchip, and spay/neuter before adoption unless age is a factor with a puppy younger than 6-12 months at the time of adoption. If that is the case, the spay/neuter will be covered in the adoption fee and the owner will be responsible to have the procedure completed at a Warrior Dog Rescue Veterinarian at the appropriate time.
Please note that the majority of our dogs in rescue are from shelters where they have been found as strays or abandoned. Their breed description is based on our very best educated guess based on physical characteristics and their dispositions. If they came to our rescue as an owner surrender, the breed description will be listed as provided by the previous owner.
